This is our favorite method of cooking beans because there is no need to soak the beans. You can do any step in the pressure cooker and get a delicious bean to enjoy in no time!

Making beans from scratch usually requires soaking overnight. Who has time for that? Without soaking this bean, you will get a soft and completely soft bean! Once done, you can add them to soup, chili, or even pasta recipes!

All you really need is black beans and water! For added flavor we include garlic, onion and salt.

You can also add any produce, herbs or spices you like. Think green pepper, fresh coriander, fresh lime juice, bay leaves, creole seasoning and more. Throw in a BBQ Dry Rub smoothie or Jamaican Jamaican seasoning to taste. A ball of pico de gallo will turn this bean into a nice Mexican bean dish.

Beans in the instant pot

Make sure you give yourself an hour of cooking time to cook this bean. Although it may seem like a long time, it is actually quite fast for beans. Usually beans should be soaked overnight to get a soft texture to eat.

  • For every (1) cup of black beans you add to the pressure cooker, add (1) cup of water, chicken broth or bone broth immediately. Here are substitutes for beef soup and chicken soup, if you need some ideas.
  • Cook on high pressure for 25-30 minutes. 25 minutes to keep some bite and 30 minutes for super soft.
  • Natural release for 20 minutes. Filter and enjoy!

Cooking black beans takes 25-30 minutes to cook in a pressure cooker. Add in the 10 minutes it takes to get up to pressure and the 20 minutes it takes to release naturally, and you look at a total of 60 minutes!

Instant Pot Refried Black Beans

This dry bean recipe is the perfect base recipe for making fried black beans. Just save the cooking liquid while filtering and add a little back while you mash the beans, until you reach your favorite texture. After puree stir in 1 tsp. Of cumin and oregano. We also recommend 1/4 teaspoon of chili powder. Drizzle in a little olive oil to make them a little more like renewed beans in a restaurant.

  • 1 Goblet Black beans, washed and sorted (* Note 1)
  • 1 slice Yellow or white onion
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • ½ teaspoon Sea salt
  • 1 Goblet Instant water or bone broth in a saucepan (* Note 2)
  • Wash the beans and choose pebbles or old beans.

  • Add the beans, onion, salt, garlic and soup to the pressure cooker and mix to combine. Secure the cap, making sure the valve is in the sealed position.

  • Adjust the pressure cooker to “pressure cooking” or “manual” (depending on the model) at high pressure for 25-30 minutes. (25 minutes for beans with a small bite, or 30 minutes for soft beans). After the timer beeps, let it release naturally for 20 minutes.

  • Quickly release any remaining pressure before removing the lid.

  • Remove the onion slices with a slotted spoon and drain the excess liquid. Taste and add more salt, to taste.

Note 1 – Be sure to choose pebbles or floating beans.
Note 2 – You can use water but the bone broth really increases the flavor.
