what do you need

This air-fried asparagus recipe connects quickly and with a minimum of ingredients, making it one of my favorite easy side dishes to cook at night. The following is an overview of the basic ingredients, with the quantities listed included in the recipe card below:

  • asparagus: You will need one kilogram of chopped asparagus for 4 servings. Look for solid, straight asparagus spears, with a little white at the bottom of the stem. They can be thin or thick, just keep in mind that cooking thicker spears will take longer. You will need to trim the edges before you cook them, see tips below!
  • Fat: Extra virgin olive oil, or other cooking oil like avocado oil.
  • Spices: Salt, pepper and garlic powder.
  • Parmesan cheese: Grated fresh Parmesan cheese gives the air-fried asparagus all sorts of delicious flavors and even a little crunch while cooking. Of course, you can easily make this milk-free cheese-free recipe – great roasted asparagus with simple salt and pepper!
  • Optional decoration: You can choose to leave your crispy asparagus with parmesan as is, or give the spears fresh lemon squeeze, chopped parsley sprinkle, or add crushed red pepper flakes for garnish.

How to chop asparagus

If you have ever cooked with asparagus before, or not, you will notice that the tip of the asparagus spear is particularly hard and woody. This fibrous and chewy part is the part that needs to be trimmed. There are two easy ways to do this:

  • With a knife: Use a sharp knife and find where the white (or brown) edges fade into the green of the spear, and cut the edges.
  • With your hands: You can also detach the wood edges using your fingers. Find the spot between the white and green of the stem where it softens, then tear off the hard end.

Tips for success

Here are some tips for best results when roasting asparagus in the air fryer:

  • Remove the hard edges: Do not forget to cut or cut off the tree edges before you cook your asparagus. If the whole spear is hard or wired after cooking, it could be a sign that the asparagus is overcooked.
  • Note the size: With this in mind, the cooking time may vary slightly depending on the thickness of your asparagus. Thinner spears tend to cook faster, sometimes even half the time! So pay attention to the size of the spear and adjust the frying time as needed.
  • Fit to your Air Fryer: If you use a smaller air fryer, you may need to extend the cooking time or work in groups. On the other hand, if you roast asparagus in a larger fryer, it will take less time. I use an oven styler toaster Air frying And sometimes I have to add some more time. In any case, you should start testing the asparagus after marking the 5 minutes, to make sure they are cooking well.

Ideas for variations

This crunchy asparagus recipe can be modified in all sorts of variations of flavors. Here are some options to try:

  • Add herbs: Refresh the asparagus with chopped fresh parsley, dill, basil, mint or thyme.
  • Different seasoning: Try different spices like paprika, red pepper flakes, onion powder, Italian seasoning mixture, lemon and herbs and others.
  • lemon: Lemon zest over a burst of citrus flavor.
  • Balsamic: Drizzle the spears with olive oil and balsamic vinegar before tossing and grilling.
  • sharp: Prepare spicy asparagus with a sprinkle of cayenne pepper or a drizzle of spicy sriracha sauce.
  • Asian-inspired: Coat your asparagus in soy sauce, honey, garlic or teriyaki sauce. You can also use sesame oil instead of olive oil, and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  • Add bacon: Crumble cooked bacon over a smoky and salty topping.

Submission suggestions

For casual week-long dinners until holiday dinners, there are not many occasions when the asparagus of this air fryer does not shine! Here are just a few of my favorite ways to serve it:

How to store fried asparagus in the air

Asparagus residue can be stored sealed in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Let it cool before storing in the container. To reheat roasted asparagus, simply put it back in the air fryer at 375 ºF for about three minutes, until it warms up.

Can I freeze it?

I do not recommend freezing asparagus unless you plan to use thawed leftovers perhaps in soup or stew. This is because they tend to be pulpy when thawed. Fortunately, air frying makes freshly roasted asparagus a breeze!
