Farm attire is such a classic. It’s everyone’s favorite, right? On tables at weddings: farm and Italian. Served alongside chicken tenders: Farm. Have you ever dipped your chips on a farm? How about your bread sticks and pizza crust? Did you ever pour it on top of a baked potato? Oh yeah, and it’s pretty good on salads too.

Since buttermilk is essential for a good farm sauce, you will still see a lot of it in the recipe. Most of the butter sold in stores is made from cultured low-fat milk. Although “butter” milk sounds rich, it is actually much lower in fat and calories than regular whole milk.

  • buttermilk: You can find milk in the dairy department of your grocery store. Give it good before you pour it. Sometimes it’s a little separate in the carton.
  • Plain Greek yogurt without fat: The taste of Greek yogurt complements the milk. It’s good for you and is a low calorie choice. Because it is thick, it makes the sauce feel more creamy.
  • mayonnaise: Choose any brand you like. You will only need 2 tablespoons. Mayo balances the sauce so that it is not too sour and that also makes it nice and smooth.
  • Fresh parsley: You sure do not get fresh herbs in a bottle sauce! You will find that your sauce has a lot of vegetable flavor. But, I understand that fresh herbs are not always a reality then I have also attached instructions for using dry herbs.
  • Fresh chives: This grass-like herb grows abundantly in the spring. You may even see a lump of it growing in your lawn. It is in the helium family (onion and garlic).
  • Dried dill: You can use fresh if you happen to have it but since it is a fairly small amount, dried dill is usually more convenient.
  • Garlic powder: Dried form of garlic, garlic powder adds a delicate flavor. If. You are a huge garlic lover, use fresh garlic that will add a much bolder flavor to your sauce.

How to make this recipe

If you are using fresh parsley and chives, rinse them well and shake off the excess water. Chop them very finely. If you use dry herbs, you can skip this step.

Prepare the sauce in a small jar with a wide opening and a tight lid. Recycled jars are fine as long as they are clean and shiny. Measure all the ingredients and put them in a jar.

Put the lid on the jar and shake it vigorously. If you find that the sauce does not stick as smoothly as you would like, remove the lid and use a small whisk or fork to mix it well.

How to make a salad – salads 101

While Hava is a versatile sauce, I feel it is best suited for a traditional drop salad. Here are my recommendations for a perfect salad dressed with ranch. This is not an exhaustive list but it should make the wheels turn a bit.

Note that fruits are not on the list because I do not think it goes well with the saltier profile of farm sauce. For salads with fruit, try white wine vinaigrette, lemon basil vinaigrette sauce, apricot vinaigrette (love it!), Or raspberry vinaigrette.

So many good options for greens! Baby kale, baby spinach, iceberg lettuce, romaine, leafy lettuce (red or green), shredded cabbage or mixed vegetables work well. Fresh herbs are also great in this blend, such as fresh dill, cilantro, mint and parsley. I like a combination of greens in my salads.
