Crispy Baked Sweet Potato Fries

The full recipe is below, but here’s a quick rundown of how to make sweet potato fries:

First step, scrub the sweet potatoes clean and cut into chips. It’s up to you how chunky you want the fries to be. I like sweet potato chips to be thin and crispy, so as you can see from our photos, we cut them pretty thin. In our recipe video shared below, you can also see me cutting sweet potatoes into chips.

Second step, season the chips and throw in oil. Season them with a generous amount of salt and pepper to get the best tasting sweet potato chips. So that they brown and become crispy in the oven, toss them with a little oil. I like to use olive oil, but you can use whatever you have on hand. Coconut oil adds a nice flavor. We actually use coconut oil in this recipe for roasted sweet potatoes.

You can keep the seasoning simple or add even more flavor with spices. For example, a pinch of cayenne, cumin, coriander, chili powder or your favorite savory spice mix would be a nice touch. You can even use cinnamon sugar.

Seasoning of sweet potato chips

Step three, add the chips to a baking tray. We spread the chips on two hot baking sheets – we use two, so that the chips are not too close to each other. If there were, they would be steamed instead of baked and crisped. I also like to preheat my baking paper. This way, they start cooking when the chips hit the sheet pan.

Baking sweet potato chips

Fourth step, bake the sweet potato chips until browned and crispy. Baking the chips will take between 15 and 25 minutes, depending on the size you cut them. Keep an eye on them while they bake so they don’t brown too much.

The best temperature for baking sweet potato chips

I like to use a hot oven when baking chips. I go for 450 degrees Fahrenheit. If your chips are browning too quickly, reduce the temperature to 425 degrees F and add a few more minutes of baking time.

Do you eat sweet potato skins?

I leave the skins of the sweet potato. I love the extra texture (and nutrition) it provides. Leaving the sweet potato skins on also makes the prep time go by faster.

Keep in mind that baking time may vary depending on the size of your sweet potato and how accurate your oven is. (Ovens often run a little cold or hot, so we keep an oven thermometer inside to keep an eye on it). If you discovered that the chips are browning too quickly, lower the oven heat by 25 degrees.

We save the skins for the sweet potato chips, but if you prefer them without, go ahead and peel them.

you will need

4 medium sweet potatoes

3 tablespoons of olive oil

1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Homemade ketchup, optional

directions

Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare two baking sheets. The chips bake better when placed directly on the baking sheet. (Optional: line the baking sheets with aluminum foil or a silicone baking mat for easier cleaning.)

Put baking papers in the oven so that they are preheated.

Scrub, then slice sweet potatoes into 1/2-inch sticks. Add to a large bowl and mix with the olive oil, salt and pepper.

Remove the preheated baking papers from the oven, then dip the sweet potatoes in between. Spread the chips. Try not to crowd them, otherwise they won’t brown.

Bake the chips, turning once and rotating molds once, until the edges are lightly browned, and the centers are soft; 15 to 25 minutes. Sweet potato chips are done when the surface looks dry and slightly swollen. Don’t worry if the edges brown. They will taste more caramelized than burnt.

Serve fries with your favorite dipping sauce and a pinch of salt.

Adam and Joan’s tips

  • Cornstarch – Some swear by adding a generous pinch of cornstarch to the chips before tossing and baking to make the chips extra crispy. It does work so try it if you feel like it. We usually skip it, but that’s only because we’re very happy with the chips as is.
