A 3-ingredient slice recipe your friends will want a copy of!

Mixed fruit slice

This recipe for Mixed Fruit Slices is one of those recipes you’d have to write for at least five people if you were taking a tray of it to a party or gathering in pre-digital times.

With only 3 ingredients, it only takes a few minutes before it goes into the oven and bakes. In less than an hour you will be sitting with a cup of coffee and enjoying a slice.

The result is a slightly chewy fruit cake – in slice form, of course. Absolutely delicious and a lifesaver if you want to bake something but are pressed for time.

This Mixed Fruit Slices recipe is a definite keeper!

And you don’t have to write it – just send a link to your friends or use the share buttons to share with your friends on Facebook or Pinterest. Oh yes, there are some positives that come with living in the digital age.

If you’ve been following along for a while, you may know that many of my recipes come from my great grandmother’s collection of handwritten and clipped recipes from the 1930s to the 1960s along with other lovely recipes that my grandmother, mother and aunts have made over the years.

To really capture those great old fashioned Aussie recipes, I also started collecting retro recipe books from trendy shops – hence just that.

This recipe is from the community cookbook “Recipes from the Center” which was compiled in the 1990s to “benefit the children attending the Alice Springs Air School”.

I love these old fundraising cookbooks, which usually contain recipes donated by the local community. These are tested and favorite recipes of home cooks.

And I knew this mixed fruit slice recipe had to be especially good when the previous owner of the book circled it in red pen.

Only 3 ingredients!

This is true.

You’ve got to love a 3-ingredient recipe, especially when the results are as amazing as what you’ll get out of the oven when you follow this recipe.

And these three ingredients are basic ingredients that you will easily come across in your supermarket or convenience store:

  • Mixed fruits
  • Condensed milk
  • Self-raising flour (SR) (or regular/all-purpose flour and baking powder).

and another 5 minutes

The method is also super simple.

You really only need 5 minutes. Shirts.

You will need a slice pan (about 28 x 18 cm). Grease it and line it with baking paper, leaving paper hanging over the sides to help remove the slice later.

Preheat the oven to medium (180 degrees Celsius, fan).

Mix mixed fruit and condensed milk together until well combined.

Now sift in the flour into the mixture and mix again until combined.

Pour the mixture into the prepared slice pan, smoothing the mixture with a spatula to reach the edges.

Put in the oven and bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Leave the piece in the mold until it almost cools, then remove from the mold and slice into 18 squares (3 x 6).

Enjoy your mixed fruit slice

Your batch should last up to a week in an airtight container stored in a cool, dry place.

The slice also freezes well for up to 3 months.
