Recipe notes:

  • Serve these rolls warm with butter. They are also excellent with honey.
  • This is also the same dough recipe I use for my cinnamon rolls. You can double the recipe and make twice as many rolls, or double the recipe and make half rolls and half cinnamon rolls.
  • I reheated the whole pan by covering it with foil and putting it in the oven on low.

Course: bread

kitchen: American

Key word: Yeast buns

Dishes: 24 small buns

  • 1/2 Goblet milk I used 2%
  • 1/4 Goblet shortening
  • 1/4 Goblet White sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 A packet of active dry yeast 1/4 ounce or 2 1/4 tsp
  • 1/2 Goblet hot water
  • 2 1/2 cups All purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • Heat milk on the stove just to the point of boiling. Remove from the stove and add shortening, sugar and salt. Allow to cool just until warm. (About 10 minutes.) In a small bowl, add yeast to 1/2 cup of the hot water and stir to dissolve. In a large mixing bowl, add 1 cup of the flour, the cooled milk mixture, the yeast and the egg. Mix well with a spoon. Add the remaining 1 1/2 cups of flour, mix and turn out on a floured surface. Knead about 10 times until the dough is not sticky, you can add more flour if necessary. Grease a large bowl or pot. (I just use canola oil) Add dough and turn once so both sides are coated.

  • Let rise for about 1 1/2 hours in a warm place. (I just cover with a towel on the counter.) After the dough has doubled in size, punch down, remove from the bowl, and shape dough into 2-inch balls (I make mine about the size of a small walnut). Place in a greased round pan touching each other. (You can use a square mold and can make them any size you want) Lightly brush the top with melted butter and leave to rise for 30 to 40 minutes. Bake in an oven preheated to 400 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes. Make about 24 small rolls.
