How to make Christmas crackers

Start by preheating the oven to 170°C, fan (or equivalent) and greasing a slice tin (about 28 x 18cm) before lining with baking paper.

Leave the baking paper hanging over the sides to help remove it from the pan later.

Then, follow these 6 steps:

  1. Line the bottom of the pan with salads – they may double in parts.

2. Mix sugar and butter in a saucepan while stirring over low heat until the butter melts and the sugar melts.

3. Bring to a boil, increase the heat if necessary and cook for a minute without stirring.

4. Pour the hot mixture over the salads.

5. Cook Christmas crack toffee for 5 minutes or until it starts to bubble.

6. Pour melted chocolate over the caramel layer.
