Crockpot Black Eyed Peas are easy and delicious and can also be made on the stovetop. It has been a tradition to serve black peas on New Year’s Day in our family for many years. Serving this dish together with cabbage should bring you good luck and financial enrichment. This soup is also good in summer and autumn using fresh garden vegetables. This is a wonderful comfort food and delicious served anytime with my Fried Cornbread Cakes recipe.

Crockpot Black Eyed Peas Ingredients Needed:

Dry black-eyed peas (canned black-eyed peas can be used)

Chicken stock

Ham or 1 cup diced cooked ham

minced garlic

celery

Onion

diced tomatoes (optional)

Chopped okra (optional) (you can use frozen okra)

Salt and pepper to taste

water

If you make this with canned black-eyed peas, you won’t need to cover the peas with water once you put them in the crock pot. If you want more liquid once you get everything in the crockpot you can add an extra can of chicken broth, but if you want them thicker just use canned peas.

You can always use bacon instead of ham. We always have country ham at Christmas and then make it for New Year’s Day using any leftovers.

You can also make it in a pot on the stove. Just cut the cooking time until the black-eyed peas are soft.

It makes a meal in itself served with cornbread. You can also serve it over rice. Check out my recipe for Cornbread Muffins. You’ll love this delicious one too Black-eyed pea stew!
