Evoking feelings of lush blue skies in the Caribbean, the Blue Lagoon has long been a staple in cocktail bars around the world.

Going down a delicious blue lagoon on a hot summer day, preferably while relaxing on a white sand beach is heaven. This blue lemonade-style drink is instantly refreshing.

The traditional Blue Lagoon cocktail uses vodka and blue curacao. This means that it is not an option for those who cannot consume alcohol for any reason.

Our Blue Lagoon Mocktail tastes just as brilliant as the cocktail, but there’s not a drop of alcohol in sight. You can still enjoy this beautiful and refreshing lemonade taste. In fact, this lemon flavor is much more pronounced than in the cocktail.

We hope you can find a suitable sandy beach to drink it. If you can’t, don’t worry. It tastes just as good at home!

How to make a Blue Lagoon Mocktail

We are going to need four ingredients to make our blue lagoon look. You can get your hands on all of these ridiculously easily. If you keep a well-stocked cocktail/mocktail bar, then you probably won’t need to go to the store for anything.

We’re not going to give you exact measurements here. We’ll tell you how to make a single Blue Lagoon Mocktail in the next section. Just pick up a few bottles of each of the ingredients. Once you’ve tried one drink, we bet you’ll crave another!

ice

We need our blue lagoon look to be refreshing. We want this to be the kind of drink you reach for on a hot summer day.

Our mocktail glass is going to be chilled (more on that soon), but we’ll also want to load the glass with heaps of ice.

The colder you can get this drink, the better.

Lemonade (preferably Sprite)

Lemonade is a main ingredient in the Blue Lagoon cocktail. This is going to provide the bulk of the flavor profile. It’s the lemonade that gives the Blue Lagoon its lemony twang, and that’s exactly what it will do here.

You can use any lemonade you like for the Blue Lagoon Mocktail. However, since we are going to change one of the ingredients to syrup, you should try to aim for a lemonade that is not too sweet. Many people go for Sprite, but you might want to experiment a bit.

We do suggest you use carbonated lemonade. It tastes better. However, the choice is entirely yours.

Freshly squeezed lemon juice

Do not use the squeeze bottles of lemon/lime juice often used for baking. They taste terrible. We’re trying to do a classic mocktail here.

Squeeze juice from one lemon. Try to extract as much juice as possible.

This will enhance the lemon flavor while adding the bitterness that the Blue Lagoon is known for.

Curaçao blue syrup

We’re ditching the vodka for this mocktail. We also kiss goodbye from Curacao. But we need to squeeze some of those flavors in there. If not, then we mix nothing more than cold lemonade.

Curaçao blue syrup will help us. It is a sugar syrup that tastes of ingredients very similar to Cursau liqueur. It’s not quite accurate, but we bet you didn’t expect it.

Keep in mind that the curacao syrup is going to be incredibly sweet. It’s just sugar. That’s why we urge you to reduce the sugary lemonade.

Required tools:

  • Chilled hurricane glass
  • Measuring jug
  • spoon, to mix

If you don’t have a hurricane glass on hand, then you can substitute any glass that is around 14 ounces.

You can make the mixing process a little more dramatic by replacing the measuring jug with some shot glasses. However, make sure you know how much liquid the glass can hold.

Tips and tricks

This Blue Lagoon mocktail is going to taste fantastic. Trust us. You’ll regularly catch us downing a few of these at night. However, one of the great things about making cocktails is that you can experiment with flavors.

Let’s start with some suggestions on how you can shake up your Blue Lagoon.

Change the lemonade

The lemonade is the heart and soul of our Blue Lagoon drink.

One of the fastest ways to change the taste is to change the lemonade.

We went for our blue lagoon block sprite, but you can choose any lemonade you like. Experiment with it. Notice how this changes the sweetness and overall taste of the drink.

If you want to cut down on calories (which aren’t that high, to begin with) then you can opt for diet lemonade.

Again, the only thing you need to do is keep the lemonade carbonated. This drink doesn’t really taste good without a little fizz.

Reduce the lemonade

If you find the lemonade too sweet, then you can replace some of it with flavorless sparkling water.

You may lose a bit of your lemon flavor here. Because of this, you may want to add an extra dose of freshly squeezed lemon juice. However, this may make the taste too sour for some people.

As we said, making a mocktail is all about experimentation.

Add more syrup

You can easily double the syrup in the Blue Lagoon Mocktail. More syrup means more sweetness. It’s already a sweet drink as it is, so we recommend not going to throw in the double syrup right away. Check out the flavors.

lift the ice

Some people are not fans of drained drinks.

While it will take time for the ice to melt, slow drinkers will find that their drink becomes quite watery.

If you refrigerate the lemonade, the curacao syrup and the lime juice in advance, you can use less ice.

Add different flavors

If you want to be experimental, then you can shake the flavors in the drink. Ease the changes. Do not change every ingredient at once. It will be hard to learn what you like/dislike.

  • Replace the lemon juice with lime juice. This gives the drink a more sour taste.
  • To enhance the sparkling orange flavor of the syrup, add two tablespoons of orange juice. This will make the orange taste sweeter. It will face the bitter orange in Curacao.
  • Add a little chili powder.
  • Add a touch of ginger.
  • Add some fresh mint leaves.

Common questions

Can you chill the Blue Lagoon Mocktail?

To some extent, although it is not recommended. If you need to chill the Blue Lagoon Mocktail, then leave the ice and lemonade out of the mix. This will give you a mixture of curacao syrup and lemon juice.

When serving the drink, you can add lemonade and ice.

If you refrigerate with lemonade and ice, then you will get a drink that tastes terrible. It will be watery and not gas.

How can you decorate a blue lagoon mocktail?

The Blue Lagoon mocktail is traditionally garnished with a cherry. You can use a lemon wedge if you want to keep the theme.

How can you make a lagoon mocktail bluer?

If you start experimenting with flavors, you may find that your blue lagoon look loses a touch of the blue color. You can’t have a blue lagoon without the blue! It would just be a lagoon.

A few drops of food coloring will solve the problem. The syrup is only blue anyway because of food coloring.

Standard food coloring shouldn’t affect the taste, though add just a few drops.

Does Curacao syrup taste the same as Curacao liquor?

It’s very similar.

Liquor Curacao and Syrup Curacao both use bitter orange for the flavor, usually these are grown in Curacao but not necessarily. This is what gives Curacao its unique flavor.

However, Curacao syrup is basically flavored sugar. It will taste much sweeter than the liquor.

Does the blue lagoon taste the same as the blue lagoon cocktail?

Very close, but it’s hard to recreate the taste of a cocktail when you make a cocktail. For starters, we’re ditching the vodka which does provide a fair amount of flavor in the Blue Lagoon cocktail. There is no proper substitute for vodka.

The mocktail is also going to be a bit sweeter than the Blue Lagoon cocktail.

The rough flavors are there ie, a bit of sweetness and a bit of bitterness. However, this will not be accurate. No matter how much you mess with the flavors, it will still taste like a mocktail.
