Simple and delicious salty ground in a fresh bun.

Aussie bun.

Aussie buns are white buns packed with a ground and salted rice mixture that somehow tastes so much better than you’d imagine when you look at the simple ingredient list.

They are a quick and delicious meal – they will be on the table in about 15 minutes.

Never heard of them?

Read on and let me tell you everything I know about the humble Australian bun.

Aussie buns recipe 1

The recipe for Aussie buns

This recipe was tucked away in a little yellow notebook that my mom, sister, and I added to over the years.

This cookbook contains recipes for classics such as Mars Bar Slice, Caramel Slice and Apricot Chicken.

And that’s for Aussie buns.

Aussie rolls were sold in my high school canteen in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

Corey Corey High SchoolNestled in the coalfields of Australia’s Hunter Valley, it wasn’t the most prestigious school.

But I remember some great teachers, a handful of nice friends, and I learned enough to get myself a place at Newcastle Law School.

And what is important at the time, the buffet was quite unusual.

I want to go back in time and order a salad roll. They were wonderful.

The sausage rolls were better than average and we also had these little creations, Aussie rolls, which I have never found anywhere else.

They were so good that the recipe ended up in our family’s little yellow recipe book.

And 30 years later, I’m curious to see how this recipe lands when I share it here on the Internet—well beyond the gates of my high school.

Making Aussie rolls

Okay, these are super easy to cook provided you have a microwave and a microwave safe bowl.

Measure the ingredients and mix everything together in a microwave safe bowl.

Make sure everything is well combined.

Ingredients for Aussie buns
The ingredients are measured in a bowl (top) and after mixing (bottom).

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and put it in the microwave on high heat for 5 minutes.

Take the bowl out of the microwave. Uncover carefully (note that steam may escape) and stir the mixture.

Cover again with plastic wrap and put in the microwave on high heat for 7 minutes.

Remove from the microwave and let cool for a minute or two.

Carefully uncover again (note that steam may escape). excite.

Cut rolls in half horizontally, place the cooked ground mixture into rolls.

You can serve them immediately, or, to get the version I remember, put them in an air fryer or in the oven on low heat for 10 minutes before serving. That’s how you get that “I’ve been in a pie oven to stay warm” luggage store touch.

You have yourself a KKHS Aussie bun. Four, actually.
