What is it about pork belly that makes it irresistible? There is a certain quality to this cut of meat that makes it work with a variety of cooking methods and spices. This could be because of its natural salinity which is not too heavy. But its x-factor could also be the richness of the meat due to the nice fat mixture. What I am sure about is that mixing it with the right set of umami flavors can make it taste even more spectacular. That’s why we have this Pepper Pork Belly recipe!
If you’re a cook just starting to learn their way around the kitchen, this could be a great dish to try. This is because the steps are simple and quite quick. You will use a variety of ingredients, but assembling them will mostly involve jumping. And the ingredients for it are quite popular, like soy sauce, peppers and garlic. You probably won’t have to worry about getting the things on our recipe list.
But before we get started, let me show you just a few of the many ways you can work with your pork belly in case you need a little more.
Other ways to cook pork belly
Roast pork belly
An absolute favorite at many pinoy parties, roast pork belly, better known as Lechon Liempo, is definitely a dish worth learning. I absolutely love the quality of this homemade dish because you can eat it while it’s perfectly hot and crispy – straight from the oven! That’s right – you can make it very simply without the need for coals. My recipe here is a pretty easy way to whip up the classic limpo while maintaining the great flavor you want for your pork belly.
Pork Belly Sinigang Sa Sampaloc
If you want to go the healthier route, there’s always the pork belly Sinigang Sa Sampaloc. It has a whole set of nutrients in one bowl from taro or gabi roots to kangkong. And it helps to add that protein from our meaty pork belly. Another great thing about sinigang is how easy it is to make. It may be quite time consuming, but the process will basically involve combining these ingredients into a stew, then letting them cook. What you mainly need to pay attention to is the time during the boiling of the various components to ensure that you do not overcook them.
Pork belly asado
Like our main recipe, this pork belly asado makes use of a rich, savory sauce. They are actually quite similar as they both have that unique saltiness that we get from soy sauce. However, if you like your dishes to go that sweet route, this asado recipe might be better for you. Brown sugar really brings out the flavor of this dish, while banana ketchup is a perfect addition for some tartness.
That’s enough talking about pork belly. Let’s finally try cooking with it!
How to cook pepper pork belly
Fry onion and garlic
Take your 3 tablespoons of cooking oil, and pour it into a cooking pot. A fever started. Then, as soon as the oil is hot, you can add 1 chopped onion and 4 minced garlic cloves. These two simple ingredients can work wonders in adding some flavor to your dish.
When your onions have softened, that’s when you need to add 2 lbs. of pork belly. Fry that along with the rest of the ingredients in the pot. Continue until the outside color of the pork turns light brown.
Of course, we’ll also need the help of a few more spices to make the pork taste truly irresistible. Just pour into a pan one tablespoon of Knorr liquid seasoning, one tablespoon of oyster sauce, 3 tablespoons of soy sauce and 2 cups of water. Let it boil, then put your lid on top. Put the heat on low, and just let everything cook until the pork is completely tender. If the mixture starts to dry out, feel free to add more water. After that, we can put the teaspoon of brown sugar, one red pepper, one green pepper and one orange pepper. Continue to cook for 3 minutes.
Let the sauce thicken
In a separate container, mix 1 ½ teaspoons of cornstarch, as well as 3 tablespoons of water. Mix the mixture well and then put the mixture into the cooking pot. Then when your sauce gets nice and thick, all you have to do is sprinkle some salt and cracked black pepper. Add as many as you like.
And you’re ready to go with really umami pepper pork belly! I hope you enjoyed cooking this dish. Let me know if you have any suggestions or questions about this recipe by commenting below
